While hiking in the late afternoon in Capitol Reef National Park, I noticed this pattern of deep diagonal shadows, dramatic slashes cut deep in the rocky cliff, reminiscent of scarring. It took my breath away. I had just finished participating in a plein air painting event at Capitol Reef, and my artist's eye was particularly awakened and observant as a result. This was one in a series I originally created for Holy Week, hence the title, With His Stripes...(the end of the phrase being "we are healed"). There was something powerful and healing about being alone on a beautiful trail that afternoon. I painted this later in the studio, from photos. The technique I used was masking and pouring, a technique that is painstaking and time-consuming, but I love the freedom of the washes of transparent color, and the way the focus is on light and shadow.
